GET TO KNOW VIRGINIA: Virginia DeBrow joined Saville in 1988 and was admitted as partner twelve years later. She understands how to help small and mid-size business owners achieve their goals. She gets to know her clients, uncovers any challenges and then offers solutions in the areas of business advisory, tax planning and compliance, estate and trust planning and compliance.

Now, let’s have Coffee with Virginia…
Virginia is pretty open about her life, however the thing that surprises most clients is the fact that her degree was not in accounting! She graduated with a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She says, “I grew up during the ‘hippie’ generation and my goal coming out of school was to better man-kind. I thought I was going to join the Peace Corps and teach in Africa. After I got married, I went back to school and started taking business classes with an accounting focus. Upon completing my accounting courses I thought, ‘Okay, I can do this.’ ”
When asked what hobbies or passions she has in her personal life, Virginia replies, “My passions are closer to obsessions- gardening, historic houses, antiquing. My husband and I have had our house on tour before. We moved into an 1896 Victorian house this past July. My husband and I are constantly collecting and working on projects to complete our home.”
Advice and Insight
Virginia believes that every client is unique. “There has never been a one size fits all. What we would discuss over coffee depends on where the client is in their business cycle/ life cycle.,” she says. Knowing that things are always changing for clients, she develops a strategy with each client, with the understanding that strategies change as the client’s circumstances change.
Focusing on estate gift & trust, Virginia also works with a lot of business owners and everything that comes with owning a business. When asked what advice she would give to her clients, she says, “I would advise my clients to really focus on developing a plan and make sure their accountant knows exactly what their desires are. I want my clients to make sure I know what their wishes are for their estate once they are gone.”
We have all overheard tips from friends at church or at book club discussing tax laws and what situations worked for them. Virginia cautions clients about “Self Diagnosis” and reminds them, “There is not a one size fits all solution. I encourage everyone to talk to us because we know specific tax situations and understand their issues.
Virginia recalls a conversation with Clint Pugh when asked about the best advice she was given by a business peer and/or from a personal peer. Shes says, “When I first started out in this business, I wanted to be perfect and was afraid to ask silly questions. I remember sitting down with Clint and asking him, ‘How am I supposed to know that?!’ Clint just laughed and said, ‘Tax Law is not black and white. There are shades of grey.’ We, as accountants, must figure out what’s the best presentation of the facts for our client to tell the story of what’s happened in that grey area.
